PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

In the aftermath of a disaster there was an urgent need to coordinate relief and ensure that affectees do not get left behind. Following the earthquake in Pakistan, a consortium of academics in the US and Pakistan, staff at the World Bank and a World Online, a private sector ISP in Pakistan set up www.risepak.com to help coordinate relief. The website was setup within 12 days of the earthquake and updated within 21 days. Over the first two months, the website updated information on damage and relief for 1220 villages (of 2500 affected) and received more than 1800 posts from individuals and organizations. This presentation reviews the features of the website, the strategies used to set it up and keep it running, and what the team learnt from the process. It also reviews the medium and long-term requirements for information and coordination, and what the successes and failures so far have been in the context of the Pakistani earthquake. It will conclude with lessons for the future.

Participants from outside the Bank do NOT need a building pass for this seminar.
