Event Description
The World Bank organized a three-day workshop on urban resettlement in collaboration with the Government of Maharashtra at which representatives of the Government of India, other Indian states, experts from civil society, and Bank staff participated.
The objective was to share perspectives, experiences, and lessons learned in urban resettlement in the context of rapid and largely unplanned urban growth in India. The workshop worked towards building consensus on ways in which to address critical issues: (a) resettlement and economic rehabilitation of burgeoning informal settlements; (b) mobilization of land for urban development; (c)resettlement policy and its implementation; (d) and livelihood restoration through resettlement.
The workshop served to share perspectives and experiences through case study presentations, group deliberations, and open discussions. Key issues included: (a) policies and procedures for urban land acquisition; (b) approaches to resettlement and rehabilitation which support growth and restore or improve livelihoods, and (c) approaches for optimal use of the real estate market.
